The front end of Auditor looks and functions very much like Jewel. Anything you can do in Jewel, you can also do in Auditor. Plus Auditor has added features.

Menu Bar

The below menu options either don't exist in Jewel, or work differently than they do in Jewel. For information about all other options, please see the Jewel Handbook.

File / Convert from Jet 3.0 to Jet 4.0

If a user is having problems with Jewel crashing when certain options are selected, the first option is to ask them to upgrade to the current version of Jewel (9.1.x for most conferences). If they cannot for some reason, converting their database to Jet 4.0 should stop the crashing, while still allowing them to use the database in their old Jewel version.

If the database is already Jet 4.0, this option will be grayed out and say "Database is Jet 4.0".

File / File Transfer

In order to send or receive Jewel databases, you will first need to enter your Auditor password in Maintenance / Properties / Internet tab. If you cannot connect to the Jewel server, check your internet connection and check your password.

Your File Transfer options are:

  • Send Database to Jewel server (for local church treasurer): This option sends the database you currently have open to the Jewel server. The church treasurer can then go to File / File Transfer / Receive from Auditor to receive your modified version of their database (and overwrite their version).
  • Download Databases from Jewel server: This option pulls up a new window with two columns. The left-hand column shows the databases and backup files in the Documents\Jewel folder of your local computer. The right-hand column shows the databases on the Jewel server, along with the date they were uploaded, and their size. The green databases were uploaded from Auditor, while the red databases were uploaded by Jewel. You can click the column headings to sort the files. Clicking a second time reverses the order of the sort.
  • Send Month-end Backup to Conference: Sends the most recent month-end backup generated by your computer to the backup server. Note that this has nothing to do with which database you currently have open. If the last time you clicked "Back Up Data" on the NextStep button was two weeks and 57 databases ago, that's still the backup that will get sent. You will rarely use this option.
  • Download Month-end Backups from Jewel server: This option also pulls up a new window with two columns. The left-hand column is still the databases and backup files in the Documents\Jewel folder on your local computer. The right-hand column, though, is the month-end backups that have been sent to the conference by your local treasurers. The file name indicates the month and church. You can sort by clicking on column headings.

Old files are periodically purged off of both the Auditor server and the conference backup server, but are kept on Jewel's backup server. It should be very rare that you need an older file, but if you do, ask and we may be able to find it.

File / Utilities

  • Compact or Repair a Database: This option allows repairs to databases that are not working properly. If a database is giving errors that you can't figure out, or is unusually large, this is a good tactic to try. When you click on it, a File Explorer window pops up. Select the database you wish to repair, and click Open. Next, type a new, unique name for the repaired database, and click Save. Jewel will repair the database. Then go to File / Open Database, open the repaired database, and verify whether repairing fixed the problem.

Help / Check for Updates

This option does not work in Auditor at this time. If you need to upgrade Auditor, see Installing or Upgrading Auditor.

Help / About Jewel

Here you find the version of Auditor you are running. But additionally, the bottom line in the lower left corner tells you the version of the database you currently have open. This doesn't directly correlate to the version of Jewel that the treasurer is running on their computer, but it's pretty close. If the database version is less than 9, the treasurer should be asked to upgrade by going to Help / Check for Updates. Updating fixes a multitude of strange error messages and other problems.
